Market Times Privacy Policy

Market Times is an educational app for Royal College students, developed by the Royal College Computer Society (RCCS) for the Royal College Capital Market Club. This policy explains what information the app uses and the choices available to students and their parents or guardians.
Information we collect
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address and admission number. Firebase Authentication handles your password; we do not store it in the student profile. We also store an account identifier, membership status, the version and time of your privacy notice acceptance, and your analytics and notification choices.
As you use the app, we store the information needed for its features, such as saved articles and watchlists, lesson and quiz progress, virtual trading orders and portfolio history, and school competition participation and results. The simulator uses virtual funds; it does not process real investments or payments.
If you enable notifications, we store a device messaging token and device platform so we can send app notifications. If you enable analytics, Firebase Analytics may collect app usage events and device information. Analytics is disabled by default. We do not put names, email addresses, admission numbers, free-form text or portfolio values into our custom analytics events.
Firebase Crashlytics may collect crash reports and technical information, such as app and device details, to help us diagnose failures. Firebase App Check also processes device or app verification information to protect the service from abuse. Firebase services may process technical information such as IP addresses and service identifiers when providing these functions.
How we use information
We use this information to create and protect student accounts, provide market education and app features, save your progress, run virtual trading and school competitions, send notifications you choose to receive, fix errors, and maintain the security of the service. We use optional analytics to understand how the app is used and improve it.
Who can see information
Your account profile and personal learning, watchlist and simulator records are available to your signed-in account and authorised people who administer the service. If you join a school competition, other eligible students may see your competition alias and leaderboard results, including virtual performance measures. They do not see your admission number or email address on the leaderboard.
We use Google Firebase to provide authentication, database, storage, cloud functions, messaging, analytics, crash reporting and App Check. Google processes information for those services under its applicable terms and privacy practices. Some processing and storage may take place outside Sri Lanka; Firebase Authentication is processed in the United States. See Privacy and Security in Firebase for details.
Your choices and requests
You can change your display name and switch analytics or notifications on or off in the app's Profile settings. Turning analytics off stops future analytics collection on that device. You can also change notification permission in your device settings.
You can delete your account in Profile settings after confirming your password. The app's deletion process removes the authentication account and its student profile, learning progress, watchlists, notification device records, virtual trading account, and competition participation and leaderboard records. Some information may remain temporarily in service logs or backups under the provider's retention practices. To ask about access, correction, or deletion of other information associated with your account, including saved article bookmarks, contact us using the address below. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
Students and guardians
Market Times is intended for Royal College students. Parents or guardians can contact us about a student's information or privacy choices. Please do not send a student's password by email.
Security and retention
We restrict access to student records through account authentication and database security rules. We keep account information while the account is active and feature data for as long as needed to provide the relevant feature, unless it is deleted or a longer period is required for a legitimate legal or security reason. No internet service can guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will update the date at the top of this page and provide any additional notice required for material changes.
